Audi's new suspension turns rough roads into electricity

Audi’s electromechanical rotary damper: eROT

In 1954, Citroen revolutionized the automotive industry with its innovative hydropneumatic suspension system that absorbed road impacts by using pump-driven hydraulic fluid and small nitrogen-filled bladders at each wheel. More than 60 years later, the next big revolution in the fields of shock absorption might be around the corner; and it is brought to us by Audi.

Less fuel and enhanced driving comfort

Audi has built a prototype that aims to adapt the increasing importance of energy recuperation to a car’s suspension. The principle behind the electromechanical rotary damper, or eROT, seems simple. Instead of absorbing the kinetic energy, that every bump induces in the car, like common dampers do, the Audi prototype puts the energy to use with the power of a 48-volt electrical system.

eROT adapts to the road surface and the driver’s driving style and has also a wider functional scope due to free definable software. Beyond that, the system saves fuel, enhances the driving comfort and enables additional space in the luggage compartment.
