Trinseo releases 2016's Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility Report

Continuously reducing our environmental footprint

Sustainability and responsibility are at the core of what we do and who we are. That is why we are proud to present our 2016 Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility Report, highlighting Trinseo’s achievements in environmental responsibility, safety and community involvement.

The report profiles how our products help our customers improve their own sustainability in areas such as vehicle lightweighting to improve fuel efficiency; green tire technology; medical device design flexibility and parts consolidation; home appliance manufacturing; LED horticulture lighting and more. The report also outlines Trinseo’s programs in product quality, safety, ethics and compliance, volunteerism, and Responsible Care®.

Furthermore, the reports provides details on Trinseo’s record-setting environmental, health and safety (EH&S) performance. Our recordable injury rate for 2016 was 0.07, the lowest it has been in five years, and a rate that is significantly lower as compared to other manufacturers and American Chemistry Council (ACC) member companies. Trinseo achieved its best safety results since the company’s formation in 2010, placing Trinseo in the top tier of all chemical companies.

Since 2011, we have achieved reductions in the following areas:

  • Total waste: down 59%
  • Volatile organic chemical (VOC) emissions: down 50%
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by Trinseo:  down 25%
  • Electricity usage: down 9%

More efficiency by eliminating a painting step

In the automotive sector, ecological awareness is more important than ever. We contribute to that by enabling the elimination of painting steps in the parts manufacturing process.

Painting is among the most energy-intensive procedures of vehicle manufacturing. Parts made from Trinseo resins have color consistency and desirable levels of gloss or matte, all without paint. Our solutions that allow for eliminating a painting step thereby streamline production, helping manufacturers become more environmentally friendly and cost efficient. For unpainted interior vehicle applications, several Trinseo advanced polymer materials have less environmental impact and can significantly reduce costs, all while maintaining outstanding end-product performance. Our top-performing products for unpainted interior application include MAGNUM™ ABS, VELVEX™ Reinforced Elastomers, and PULSE™ PC/ABS Engineering Resin, which are recognized across the industry and around the globe, demonstrating our continued innovation in developing more sustainable automotive materials.
